My name is Claire Theriot Mestepey About three years ago I started a company called Disability Insights. I guess the bottom line is I can be viewed as an inspirational speaker who teaches disability etiquette classes, although my message is that I’m not inspirational, I just want what everybody else want. I started this because I felt there was a need for speakers who might be perceived as having more of a severe disability. Instead of what I lovingly referred to as “hot guys in chairs” speakers.
I’ve spoken at several Rotary Clubs but so far my biggest coo is, my husband and I teach a class at Harris County Sherriff’s Academy to all graduating cadets, usually every 5 weeks. Its always interesting to watch the students expressions when we walk in. Most assume that my husband is the instructor and are surprise when I begin the class.
One thing that I stress in my seminar are how normal I’d like to think of myself as. And over the years our son Nicholas has always taken my disability in stride, and has a good sense of humor about his mommy.
His positive outlook inspired my first self-published children’s book, “Nicholas Gets Nervous.” I am hoping this book will leads to opportunities to create a program for schools to teach children that no matter how we look on the outside, we all have need acceptance and friendship.
I also have my 1st humorous book “My Walker and Other Glamorous Accessories” and my dvd of my class available on for sale.
